Pestle Experiencing Serious Drought

It is not uncommon for Haiti to experience an annual drought. Although complications this year are making life nearly intolerable. Locals are struggling to balance a sense of dignity without means to daily launder their clothes or properly bathe. The water sources have reduced themselves to shallow and stagnant puddles at the floor of broken cisterns that suffered from the horrific earthquake less than 1 year 9 months ago. Desperate, the people of Pestle are drinking from these water sources, in turn their skin has developed irritating rashes brought on by bacteria. They are pleading with their local government for help and relief but have not received any. Crops and livestock are now experiencing the ripple effect. Food sources are scarce and self-sustainability practices are severely cut off from the lack of water. In all our years of engaging with the needs of Pestle, Haiti these realities increase our concern today more than ever before, and we urge supporters to pray about their personal response.

Please read further about the current events of the drought here https://texasmetronews.com/51657/drought-in-haiti-province-destroying-crops-hurting-animals-and-residents/

Water shortage in Pestel

I just read through this article on the drought in Pestel.  I also see that Pestel has two desalinization units, which is truly wonderful news.

Celebrating Thriving Villages International 10th Anniversary

It is with full hearts that we highlight the 10th anniversary of Thriving Villages International. Our team is immensely blessed by the support you have shown the people tucked away in the very hard to reach area of Pestel, Haiti. Throughout these last 10 years, God has enabled Thriving Villages International to unlock access to clean water, educational opportunities, supporting means for healthcare, and resources for self sufficiency by supplying seeds and goats. Our work is far from done; actually we might be just getting started! Please feel welcome to join us in our vision "Deeply concerned about the lack of food, water, education and healthcare in rural Haiti, our vision is that Thriving Villages becomes a transforming presence of Christ by helping to provide a physical and spiritual environment in which the people of Pestel can thrive." THANK YOU for giving, THANK YOU for praying, THANK YOU for serving, THANK YOU for all the forms of support and encouragement these last 10 years.

Thriving Villages International (TVI)

2022 Summary

In 2022 Thriving VIllages International (TVI) reached its 10th year anniversary!  TVI has been primarily engaged in a remote region of Haiti called Pestel, a region without electricity, running water, or basic health care access.  The average annual income in Pestel is around $700US.

Due to gang violence and global inflation, the cost of a gallon of fuel in Pestel was $40US.  As a result, the movement of goods, including fruits and vegetables, came to a halt.  Since Pestel relies heavily on the ability to send their small-scale farming goods (like peanuts, beans, mangos) to the city markets, many in Pestel suffered greatly.

In 2022 Thriving Villages addressed basic needs by partnering with KPA (“Christians Progress Together”, a Haitian community group in Pestel):

  • Improved family economics:

    • 85 households received and planted crop seeds to produce harvests, such as peanuts and beans

    • 80 households received at least one goat as part of a long-standing goat-distribution project.  Since 2017 we have distributed over 400 goats.  Goats serve as an important source of revenue for families, and since they can be bred the offspring can also be given to neighbors to share the benefits.

  • Repaired cisterns

    • Almost all (or all) of the cisterns throughout Pestel cracked after the 2021 earthquake.  Cisterns are a primary means of getting water in Pestel.  25 cisterns were repaired in 2022, each of which serves hundreds of people.

  • Provided employment

    • TVI supports five leaders of KPA through stipends

    • TVI also supports 6 elementary school teachers (full time) annually

  • Supported education

    • TVI provided full scholarships for 110 elementary students ($110 per student), and subsidized the public high school (300 students) and another elementary school (64 children) in the region.

    • TVI funded a school feeding program at the St. Rose School when teachers started noticing more children coming to school hungry.  The cost of the feeding program is $110 per student.

    • St. Rose School expanded to include 5th grade in 2022, with support from TVI.  We are planning to build another classroom since the school is growing.

    • Two university students, Herlande and Jean-Gilles, are finishing up their final year in agricultural studies.  One student, Rosemithe (pictured on the right),  graduated from nursing school and is now serving in Pestel.

We are honored to partner with KPA, our main in-country Haitian partnering organization.  We receive updates from KPA.  We want to share part of their 4th quarter report with you since it provides a helpful snapshot into KPA’s activities and some of their challenges.  This was sent by our Haitian colleagues in English, which is an achievement because in 2016 we paid for the leadership of KPA to take English classes so that we could better communicate with one another, and that investment has paid off!  Here is the KPA report as they describe the work:

For the fourth quarter, we did some work despite the trouble in the country. 15 families received goats, 20 families received seed and 16 elderly people had monthly money . We finished the repair of 2 cisterns, the 3 others will be finished shortly because it has just rained. The work was stopped because of the drought.

The [St. Rose elementary] school was doing with a little quantity during the month of November and December. The children will attend class totally in January.  After the crop, some people gave us peanut for St Rose school children. They told the crop was good, they have enough for  selling, they let a part for replanting and the other part for St Rose Children.

Miss Rosemite [a nurse that TVI provided funding to train and who is now living and serving in Pestel] is helping some elderly people and children. She explained that  the people are very poor, they are facing hunger because they can not work now . This is why we include in the budget $3000 Dollars for emergency food  for 70 people with extreme needs.  Gerald [a KPA leader] wrote about  a latrine project in [the village of] Luciere. This is a good project because the people face Cholera in the country. Thanks for all the things you are doing for the people in Pestel and for KPA.

—4th Quarter Report, Submitted by KPA Leadership

TVI donations are sent to Haiti via KPA, which manages the funds and uses them to purchase and distribute items and pay teachers. TVI board members cover the overhead expenses.  The TVI Board is very glad that we have the opportunity to directly benefit some of the poorest people in our Hemisphere through our giving.  Through our relationship with KPA, we meet real-world needs that include food, water, education, and employment.

Cistern Repairs

After the earthquake 2021 most if not all of the cisterns throughout Pestel cracked, making them ineffective at collecting water.  Under the management of KPA, we assisted with rebuilding and/or repairing 25 cisterns.  The photos below show Before/After.

Pestel is a severely water deprived area.  Under normal circumstances people in Pestel will walk > 30 minutes one-way to obtain water.   After the 2021 earthquake water scarcity dramatically worsened.  We anticipate building and repairing more cisterns in 2023.

A broken cistern from 2021 earthquake that no longer held water.

Christmas Video 2022

It has been years since I posted here, but I decided to revisit the blog because I find it to be a great place to post updates as they come in, and to keep a record so I can look back over it.  So onward!

On Christmas Day I received this lovely video from Nelson in Pestel.  This was one of the best Christmas presents I experienced because throughout 2022 I heard so often about the struggles with starvation throughout the region.  With global inflation and gang violence, costs in Pestel skyrocketed.  A gallon of fuel cost about $40USD, for example.  TVI sent additional funding to support work that Nelson wanted to do for the people around his village, and this video shows us a group of children receiving a Christmas meal.  Notice the tarps--these were sent out to Pestel soon after the terrible earthquake of 2021.

The male voice you hear is Nelson!

Haiti updates

Hi all,

Haiti Trip
Please be in prayer for four board members of our Thriving Villages International organization as they prepare to travel to Haiti next Sunday.  The four are:  Jen Fredrick, Jim Bishop, Doug Stauffer, and Evens Lanot.  They will be meeting in Port-au-Prince for several days with the leaders of a development group from Pestel, KPA (Christians Progress Together).  KPA is a Haitian organization that was founded over a decade ago by Sister Fidelis (she is also now a TVI Board member!).  The purpose of the meeting will be to get to know one another and discern how the two organizations (KPA & TVI) might work together best.

Thanks to Middle School Students!!!
A BIG thanks to the LMS Hershey Middle School students and their principal, Mr. Eri Lee, on their very successful fund-raiser today!  They raised over $2000 for Pestel through a 3-on-3 basketball event (See photos).  The students did a LOT of work to organize and promote this.  It was also great for us (as parents) to see our kids taking on leadership roles in the planning.  We were quite humbled when we learned that the Middle School had designated TVI to receive the funds, which will be used to purchase seeds for replanting crops since the devastation of Hurricane Matthew late last year.

Pestel Update

Greetings everyone,

It has been a LONG time since I used this email distribution list to provide updates about Thriving Villages.   There are some very important updates:

Since Hurricane Matthew the situation in Pestel has turned dire.  Pestel was in the direct line of the hurricane.  The destruction of livestock, housing, and the environment (e.g. fruit trees, crops) has been enormous.  The mangroves (think:  fish nurseries) appear to have been destroyed as well.

Cholera (a deadly vomiting/diarrheal infectious disease) has broken out again in Pestel since the flooding has washed the cholera bacteria all over the place.  Yesterday's devastating report was that there are 125 active cases of cholera with 12 deaths since the hurricane.

We have been reaching out to a lot of organizations that might respond to the disaster in Haiti.  Obviously they are all busy.  But we have heard from some of them, and yesterday we received the most wonderful report that UNICEF (UN's children's fund) arrived in Pestel with cholera response supplies!!!  You can read the article here which mentions Dr. Seneque (misnamed Dr. Cedec).  https://blogs.unicef.org/blog/fighting-cholera-after-hurricane-matthew/
This is an incredibly awesome answer to prayer!!!!

Sister Fidelis and Dr. Paat will be flying down with a medical team today to Haiti to try to reach Pestel.  Miriam Frederick and a team is heading out to Pestel today.  Please pray for the safety of all!!!

We are in contact with a couple of Disaster Relief organizations to try to encourage them to engage in Pestel.  Please pray for a positive response soon.

We will be posting more information our Facebook page, so please follow along there:  https://www.facebook.com/ThrivingVillages/   We will plan to use the Facebook page as our primary way of communication.  If you would like periodic updates, please let me know and we can send you them by email in batches.

Through Julia Morley we are hoping to re-engage Variety International and other donors on behalf of Pestel.  There are great immediate needs as well as pending, more slow-growing disasters (starvation, lack of water, lack of housing, worsening cholera epidemic).   While we cannot possibly respond to all of these needs, we will try to faithfully do what we can to shine the light on the people of Pestel in their great time of need, and facilitate involvement of organizations who are willing to respond.

Please pray now for the people of Pestel, those who are trying to respond to their great needs both in Haiti and here.

With a heavy but hopeful heart,
Ben

Thriving Villages Update

Dear Friends of Thriving Villages International,

I'm writing to bring you up to date on our activities, and inform you of some significant changes in our current level of activity.   As you may know we had initiated and carried on both advisory and operational responsibilities for several important activities in Pestel, Haiti, over the last five years.  Many of the details can be found on our website:  www.thrivingvillages.org.

First, let me give you an update on TVI's activities.

*  APPAS – the Community Health Program which employed local Haitians to deliver basic health care, vitamins, and health screening to children in more than 200 remote villages – began in 2010 just after the terrible earthquake in Haiti.  This program operated under a multi-year grant from Variety International, The Children's Charity.

Status – We have successfully completed the multi-year grant commitment under which we had established and operated a network of community health workers providing various children's health initiatives in the greater Pestel region, reaching over 10,000 children and young women.  This program is dependent upon substantial financial support and also significant operational oversight.

Upon this grant completion we are seeking other in-country organizations interested in providing the required financial and operational responsibilities.   As this develops we will keep you updated.

*  Water Project & Well Drilling Initiative  -  Our primary role has been advisory, with projects funded under various gifts.

Status: After much effort by many individuals and organizations, four unproductive wells were drilled.  Our in-country partner, Water Missions International, determined that the Pestel area was not conducive for further drilling until significant resources become available in Haiti which do not currently exist.

GOOD NEWS – An alternative means in providing clean water to families was found in an existing program through the distribution of household ceramic water filters, and we have helped make the connections between the generosity of the Miss World Organization's charity, Beauty With A Purpose, with work being done by Mr. John Ball and his team in the Duchity area of Pestel.

*  Educational Development in Pestel  -  Advisory and various support roles.

Status:  From the very beginning of our engagement in Pestel, we have supported various important educational initiatives, from supplementing teacher salaries to more recent fund-raising to assist with the completion of a new wing of Pestel's high school.  In fact, our very first fund-raising activity was to purchase doors for a school room and pay a local carpenter to build benches for the children.  Over the years we have found Father Parnel to be an effective educator and leader, and we will continue to provide annual financial support for his efforts as our resources allow.  We view this as a wise and effective investment in the long-term health of Pestel.

Second, I'll mention the significant changes in TVI's operational activity.

Being responsible for the operations of the Child Health Campaigns in Haiti and several other related projects has required substantial personal time and commitments over the years, with corresponding pressures on family and professional responsibilities.  With completion of the several grant projects listed above, it is an appropriate time to re-evaluate the "role" that I and TVI should play as we look ahead.  We plan to take a break from program involvement, except for the educational support mentioned above, as we discern our next steps together.

We invite your interest and prayers.  Contributions can be directed towards our educational support efforts.

This has been a most productive and intense period of my and TVI's activities, and the remarkable opportunities presented bear testimony to God's grace and blessing.   We are deeply grateful for your prayers and support in the past, and request continued prayer as we look to the future.

While the numbers have been jaw-dropping (10,000 children and young women reached, 23% anticipated reduction in child death from Vitamin A supplementation, hundreds of children with opportunity to continue their education, thousands of households to have clean water), the individual stories have always held the most sway for us.

●      The teacher who continues to work, both inspiring and educating his classes, and providing financially for his family

●      The APPAS worker who is now living in the house he built for his young family with the earnings from the Child Health Campaigns

●      The child who drinks clean, safe water in front of us from a ceramic water filter bucket system

Yet, for the 70,000 in Pestel who still live in the grip of extreme poverty and deprivation, our prayers continue for them.  For those of you whose hearts and minds continue to attend to the people of Pestel, we are deeply grateful and encouraged.  For those who live in and travel to Pestel to bring a hope and some relief to a neglected region, we pray for your safety and your success.

For love of God and our neighbors in Pestel, we press on with the work ahead.  May God give us His grace and wisdom.

Sincerely,

Ben Fredrick

100% pass rate

A national report for education in Haiti was just released today stating that the national pass rate for two crucial exams--one at the end of 6th grade and the other at the end of 9th grade--is 76%

Congratulations are due!   We learned that Father Parnel Lundy's school in Pestel had 100% pass rate for 6th graders and 9th graders.  These are crucial national examinations.  Here is a note (slightly edited for readability) from Fr Parnel Lundy:

We just published the results of state examens for June 2014.Our students passed the test exams 6th and 9th grades--all managed successfully. I am also glad and proud. Entire educational community of the parish is satisfied. On this happy occasion , I come with as much pride and join with you to share our joy. There ,you have also contributed . Also I pray you to share it with your family , Thriving Villages International Inc ,benefactors and all those with you working with dedication for Pestel ,for Haiti.
You can be thanked thousand times! Indeed, your devotion is not only rewarded , but we are encouraged to continue working together. More over , this result gives us satisfying to believe that the St. Francis schools are  growing from year to year. Next year we will present our first class of students for the 12 rd. grade state exams.
May God continue to bless you ,your family and Thriving Villages International greatly !

TVI July Update

Hi all

I've been eager to send this update out!    Please feel free to share with others.   If you'd like paper copies to distribute please let me know.

See the attachment for important updates on:
---High School building project in Pestel
---Ceramic water filter project
---New health-related project

We are thankful to so many.  Thanks to all who help, in so many ways, to allow us to participate in this important work.  Some give of their time and talents; some give donations; some give through their personal connections; many give through their outright encouragement and prayers.

Jen and I are learning the importance of pacing so that we "do not grow weary in well-doing".  (Galatians 6:9)  As that verse hints, we believe important seeds are being planted in Pestel that will, over time, grow up into a rich harvest.   Please pray that God will continue to send those who can help in this work so that it will indeed be fruitful, and that people will be amazed at what He has done.

New video on the household ceramic water filters!

Hello everyone,

I'm pleased to share the latest video produced by the Miss World Organization.  Through the Miss World Organization charity, Beauty with a Purpose, they have already raised enough funds for 2,000 bucket filters and we are estimating this will reach about 12,000 people as a result.  We are also  thrilled with the work that Mr. John Ball and his team (from Illinois) have been doing to prepare for this project and to implement it on the ground.

We are so thankful for the substantial health improvement that clean water will bring to these families in Pestel.  We're also excited for the jobs that will be created in the area since these filters are produced in Haiti!

Please check out this video, recently released:

We remain thankful that God continues to bring people together for this important work.  We see this as an outpouring of His compassion for the people of Pestel.

Special Edition: Sister Fidelis

Hi everyone,

This May Sister Fidelis will be 'retiring' from Haiti to return to Sylvania, Ohio.  Please see the attached document (TVI Update April Special Edition) as well as this short presentation:

Sister Fidelis Presentation
(click on the link, then click download and open the file when it is done downloading.  If you have trouble, please let me know!)

In putting these together my mind was flooded with memories of my time with Sister Fidelis as we spent hours together in Pestel.  I remember meeting Sister Fidelis for the very first time as she stepped up (a big step!) out of the boat that came to pick us up at the port in Jeremie and introduce us to Pestel.  You can read more about it here:  http://thrivingvillages.org/howWeBegan.php

I remember the two of us talking around her table in the village of Ferrier with only an oil lamp dispelling some of the thick darkness around us.  The world becomes very small when all that is illuminated is a bit of the table and an outline of the other person across from you.

We visited many villages together, usually walking/hiking to get there.  And some of them were quite a distance.  As we traveled Sister Fidelis would prep me for how we might interact with the community.
 Here's a sample:

My wife and I have had the great joy of meeting many of her friends and Sisters in Sylvania, Ohio.    And while we may not visit with her again in Haiti, I imagine we'll find a chance to sit across from her table in Ohio!

With great love and affection,
Ben

Thriving Villages Intl Spring Update

Hi all,

I'm trying to get into the habit of sending out a quarterly update.   So far so good!  Please feel free to share the attached document with others.

We had a good trip to Pestel in March with the Miss World Organization and thankfully, while there were a number of snafus, there were no injuries/accidents or illnesses.  We are now cooking up some really neat plans and I hope to share that with you fairly soon, probably in the next update (oh boy, a cliffhanger!).

There is so much for which to be truly thankful, as you'll read about in the update.  There is no way to give everyone his/her dues, but I think you'll get the sense that this is a combined effort with individuals doing their parts.  So much is needed on so many levels, and we have seen time and time again people step up with encouragement, prayers, donations, fund-raising, providing opportunities to speak, promoting the needs of the poor in Pestel, managing projects, organizing people, volunteering to take one some aspect of the work, etc.  In short, people willing to give of themselves.

With a grateful heart,
Ben

March Update--Haiti

Hi all,

Trip to Haiti
I will be heading to Pestel, Haiti this weekend with the Miss World Team and we ask that you might pray for our safety and any anxiety.  I remain amazed at their resiliency and their desire to help the children of Pestel through their Beauty With  A Purpose charity.  I really am looking forward to seeing them all again.

Ceramic Water Filters
One of the exciting components of our trip will be visiting the village of Duchity in Pestel where a team, led by Mr. John Ball, has been implementing an initiative with the ceramic water filters that will ultimately reach about 2,000 households ( =  12,000 people)!!
About two weeks ago I gave a presentation at my medical school (Penn State Hershey) to medical students on our work in Pestel, and they collected coins in jars during classes to raise money for the water project.  They raised $1001 in a week!!!   And these are "poor medical students"  :)

Water Deprivation
On a down note:   Much of Pestel has been experiencing a very hard, dry spell.   I've been receiving notes by email from several people over the past month.  There have been some deaths related to this as well as people have taken risks to try to obtain water.  This has been very hard to process, and it has been a burden on my heart which I have not shared with you because, frankly, I didn't have any solutions.  But I now realize that was the wrong decision.  I recognize that I don't need to always have solutions before sharing these sorts of things.
I received word from Sister Jo in Pestel that they did experience some rain for three days recently, which is a huge blessing (as you can imagine) and  a surprising answer to prayer.   Of course, the will need a LOT more rain.  In speaking with others we have discussed trying to find ways to truck water into Pestel just to avert this crisis, but even here I don't know where to turn.   The dry season could last for another month (or more).
In discussions with Water Missions International, we are not giving up on well-drilling.  But we need some sophisticated equipment with expertise to be able to identify potential underground sources of water to improve chances of hitting water.

Health Clinic
For some time I've been discussing the possibility (and necessity) of a building project in Pestel to construct a health clinic.  This would be located in about the middle of the region where there is no health facility and would serve as an important staging area for the health campaigns as well.   Please pray for wisdom and discernment on this as it is not a small undertaking.

Thanks!
Ben

2013 Year End Report for Thriving Villages

Hello everyone,

We are happy to provide a 2013 Year End Report for your reading!  Please see the attachment.  We do not intend to convey a message that this represents "our work".  Please see this report as a celebration of many of the good things that we have played some small part of and/or took witness to related to the people of Pestel.  We view this as God's goodness being poured out on the people of Pestel, and we pray that each of us will be encouraged to trust Him more.

At the end of the Year End Report is a 2-page Update.   This is a new format that we are trying out to help convey information.  Please let us know what your thoughts are about this format.   Also, if anyone has interest in helping develop these types of reports we would be most grateful!   We can provide the content if someone wants to help with the formatting for the updates/reports.

Thank you for your part in this.   We hope your joy increases as your read through this!

On behalf of the Thriving Villages Board,

Ben
